We love it when interesting people with interesting things pop through the door.  Take the other Friday for example.  We were standing in the shop discussing the longevity of Hilary’s beautiful Chrysanthemums from our local florist changing-blooms.co.uk (they’re still going strong – must be at least 6 weeks now) Yellow-Chrystanths-in-a-jug-surrounded-by-Christmas-decorations-and-keyrings when Joan and Bruce walked in from the drizzle wearing the most amazing hats.  Joan’s was particularly eye-catching – a gorgeous organic natural form that looked like it had been grown in a sub-tropical garden.Australian felted wool cloche-style hat

Over from Australia visiting their daughter in Devon they’d popped in to see what was in the shop, but it was Joan’s creations that caught our eye.  Felted and sculpted by her they were very practical even in our soggy climate, but more importantly they were extremely lovely to look at.

Joan also felts berets which involves incorporating fine silks into the mix and we just couldn’t resist adding a couple of these to our window display.

These two were destined for a craft centre in Bideford – very glad they didn’t get that far.

And we were thrilled when Joan popped back to say hello with her daughter Holly a week later.  Holly is also a felter and makes the most spectacular hats too – you can check these out on her facebook page.

Back to today and we’ve been making the most of the chilly damp weather by partaking in one of our favourite pastimes – eating cake! Specifically Nish’s Christmas Stollen and some Linzer torte.

So good.
